A wedding is really three rooms
The same equipment rarely suits all three. Working out which parts of the day need what is most of the job.
The hardest part to get right and the only part with no second take. Vows and readings are quiet, and an outdoor ceremony has no walls helping you. One speaker on a stand and a wireless microphone covers most ceremonies; a large guest count or a ceremony held away from the reception needs more.
Dinner music sits low, the dance floor sits loud, and one pair of speakers has to do both. A subwoofer is the difference between a room that is merely loud and a floor that feels full.
A handheld microphone passed between people, or two if the top table is spread out. Wireless means nobody is tethered to a stand in the photographs.
What tends to get rented
If your DJ or band is bringing their own system, you may only need the ceremony covered. If not, these are the usual starting points.

Ask your DJ or band exactly what they bring. Most DJs arrive with a pair of speakers and a microphone, which is often enough for the reception but rarely reaches an outdoor ceremony in a separate space. A live band is the opposite: they need more inputs and monitoring than a DJ setup provides. Knowing which you have changes what you need to rent.
