A gym is the hardest room you will ever put sound in
Hard floors, hard walls and a high ceiling send everything back at you. Volume is not the answer; placement and the right speaker are.
Pure speech in a reverberant room. Speakers aimed at the audience rather than the walls do more for intelligibility than extra power ever will.
More inputs than a meeting: microphones on stage, music from a laptop, and someone mixing it. A mixer with enough channels is what makes this manageable.
Sports days and graduations have no walls at all, so sound simply leaves. Coverage matters more than volume, which usually means more speakers rather than louder ones.

Walk the room and find the power. Gyms and halls often have far fewer usable outlets than you expect, and they are rarely where the stage is. Knowing that in advance decides whether you also need extension cables and where the speakers can physically stand.
